A Russian outpost was founded here in 1799.  Sitka thrived on fur trading in sea otters and seals until the animal populations were severely depleted.  Today, its rich Russian heritage can be felt and seen in the town beneath the onion domes of St. Michael's Cathedral (built 1848).

In 1867 the Russian Government sold Alaska to the United States ($7.2 million) and the papers were officially signed in what is now Baranof Castle State Historic Site.  The exact site is marked by 7 Russian Cannon and a commemorative plaque.  

 

Get out on the water aboard a dayboat or a kayak, and you'll be treated to wildlife such as seals, seabirds in their rookeries and maybe even a whale sighting!

See the totem poles on the trail to the fort and Russian Bishop's House. Sheldon Jackson Museum, Isabel Miller Museum and to the north of town the Sitka State Historic Site.  

The dramatic settings in the shadow of Mount Edgecumbe are renowned and a old-growth forest in Sitka National Park will rejuvenate your soul.
